Strange look in Ubuntu 9.10

What steps will reproduce the problem?
 1. download and unpack Ubuntu 9.10: 
    http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/371063
 2. Run GMapCatcher in Ubuntu 9.10
 3. Take a look at the widgets

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
 the widgets should not overlap, it looks like the window is too small
 also the tools button is really small
