Why is the " " not working correctly?

Meanwhile this works just fine:

$totalValue .= "Correct: {$correct}
";
$totalValue .= "Wrong: {$wrong}
";

Use nl2br for inserting html-linebreaks (<br />)

echo nl2br($whichwrong);

Normal are treated by browsers like normal whitespaces.
