I plan on building an application/site that will give you information based on a your Apple product serial number, specifically Macs. There's plenty of sites that do this but I'm not sure how... Some examples are...

My thinking is that they know the serial number structure and built a database of all the possible options and use a script to decode the serial. Anyone else have any insight on how I could accomplish this? Thanks
