I would like to know your opinion please, I am building a social discussion website in which you have the option of adding a user as a friend or follow, so my question is :" Do you think it is necessary to know the date of when you became friends ?" (On facebook it is necessary because it's what facebook is about)

I am asking this question because the way i did the friend system is by adding a column to the users_table and named it friends_list and then I add each friend Id to the rest of the field with "," in between and when i want to remove a friend i turn the string of numbers into array and drop the id i want and Not by making a new table which will have friend_timestamp

Why don't you setup one Table that hold the User (Friends) e.g. with and one Table that hold the Connections:

friends.table
- id
- name
- birthday
- etc

and

connection.table
- id
- friends_id
- connected_with_id
- timestamp

that would be a better way in my opinion - Best Regards
